Tuft & Needle mattress placed in a room surrounded by two night tables.

The first thing you notice about the Tuft & Needle mattresses is the unusual name. It really stands out from other bed brand names and makes you wonder. What do needles have to do with mattresses? What is “tuft” anyway?

The word “tuft” has to do with the upholstering of furniture pieces. It is a specific technique where you pinch pieces of a product together and then sew them together. Tufting prevents the material from becoming lumpy or misshapen over time. To tuft properly, you need a particular type of needle – the tufting needle.

Since 2012, the Tuft & Needle mattress company offers quality beds. Their practices exclude any gimmicks and confusing lingo. Since then, this online bed-in-a-box company has gained great popularity. The company is also known for championing various social and environmental causes.

Other than mattresses, like the T&N Mint and the T&N Hybrid, the company offers various other products. These include different bed frames and bedding items like pillows, sheets, blankets, duvets, etc.

Today we will highlight the bed that started it all, the Tuft & Needle mattress. This model is popular due to its simple design and exceptional pressure relief. The model also enjoys great popularity among those looking for great mattresses at an even better price value.

Even though many praise the Tuft & Needle mattress, we can’t help but wonder if the praise is warranted? Are the accolades deserved, or should you take them with a pinch of salt?

Come with us and take a deep look at this Tuft and Needle mattress review.

What Is Tuft and Needle Mattress Made Of?

Cover

Let’s start this Tuft & Needle mattress review from the top!

The Tuft & Needle mattress cover was made to be airy, durable, and soft to the touch. The white patterned cover is a knit blend of micro polyamide and polyester that keeps you cool at night. This material is excellent because it’s resistant to tears.

Sidenote: for just $50, you can also add their antimicrobial protection, the HeiQ NPJ03. Just so you know.

Unfortunately, the Tuft and Needle mattress cover is not waterproof or removable. If it gets dirty, the company suggests to spot clean the cover with some mild detergent and water. Avoid rubbing the spot, but instead, gently dab it.

Comfort Layer

One of the things that makes the Tuft & Needle mattress stand out is the 3″ special polyfoam in its comfort layer. The 2.8 PCF dense foam is the company’s own creation, the T&N Adaptive® foam

This adaptive foam was designed to have the qualities of both memory foam and latex. Like memory foam, it offers great pressure relief as it contours to your body. Like latex, the material is quite bouncy. The bounciness allows you to move without feeling like you’re sinking in quicksand.

The foam is also enriched with ceramic cooling gel and graphite. Both of these materials work together to create a temperature-neutral bed. The graphite absorbs heat away from you while the ceramic gel beads dissipate it.

Instead of harmful flame retardants, the company has designed a special fire barrier. This barrier is a knit blend of polyester and cotton, treated with food-grade salt. This makes the Tuft & Needle mattress more environmentally friendly.

Transitional Layer

Now, here’s the thing. Besides the unique materials, the Tuft and Needle mattress has a simplistic structure. It only has two layers instead of the regular three. Or in other words, it doesn’t have a transitional layer. Instead, a small amount of synthetic latex between the foam layers acts like an adhesive.

For many people, this can be something that may put them off. We understand because the transitional layer has an important role. It provides both support and cushioning between the upper and lower layers. So, for example, stomach sleepers might not like this bed.

However, we still think this is a good mattress. According to a lot of Tuft & Needle mattress reviews, the bed is a hit with many sleepers. But, if you are a heavier-bodied sleeper, you might want to stick to a model that suits your needs better.

Base

Like a lot of all-foam models, the Tuft & Needle mattress has a high-density polyfoam in its base. The foam is 7″ thick and has a density of 1.8 PCF. The material is quite firm, which adds to the longevity and sturdiness of the bed.

Another interesting thing to note is that the foam also has an open-cell structure. The structure amps up the breathability of the Tuft & Needle mattress

Although, as we have stated previously, there is no transitional layer. If you are of a heavier build, there is a possibility that you will sink right into the firm base. This can cause you some discomfort.

Our advice? Check our pick of mattresses that suit your body type.

Firmness & Feel

Based on the company’s website, the Tuft & Needle mattress feels medium-firm. Such mattresses usually suit a large majority of sleepers. The model does feel soft to the touch. But many Tuft and Needle mattress reviews can’t seem to agree on its firmness ranking.

The mattress offers a perfect balance and comfort and support.

Why is that? Well, firmness and feel are subjective grades. What might be soft to someone might be firm to another. Another factor to note is that the Tuft & Needle mattress is an all-foam model with just two layers. These layers also have different firmness levels. As such, for lightweight sleepers, the Tuft & Needle mattress might feel too soft, as they don’t press in so much. Whereas heavyweight sleepers might sink in further. That way, they come into contact with the dense base layer.

In terms of firmness, the Tuft and Needle mattress usually ranks 6.5 or 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.  We also agree with this ranking, as it puts it in the medium-firm to firm spectrum. We invite you to try the mattress for yourself to get a better experience.

The firmness levels of Tuft and Needle ranges between 6.5 and 7.

As for what it feels like to sleep on the Tuft & Needle mattress?

Well, most of the Tuft & Needle mattress reviewers agree that it has a soft, neutral foam feel to it. The bed does a great job of balancing the soft feel of the Adaptive foam and the sturdy base. That way, you get the best of both worlds. The cradling, pressure-relieving feeling without the restrictiveness.

At first glance, the Tuft & Needle mattress might be a good pick for back and combination sleepers. But, don’t go just yet, before you take a look at our detailed analysis for each sleeper type.

How Long Does Tuft and Needle Mattress Last?

Like most mattresses on the market, the Tuft & Needle mattress comes with a limited warranty of 10 years. As it stands, the model owes its longevity to its highly dense polyfoam base. The base supports the sleepers and the entire structure.

Based on the experience of many Tuft and Needle mattress reviewers, you can aspect that it will last at least 8 years. This is about the average lifespan for all-foam beds. It goes without saying that with proper care, your Tuft & Needle mattress might last you longer.

As per the company’s recommendation, rotate your mattress every six months. That way, you can lessen the risk of sagging edges and make your Tuft & Needle mattress last longer. Do not flip the bed, as the base layer is quite firm.

Now, per our research, we couldn’t see if there is a weight limit to the model. If you go off their website, the Tuft and Needle mattress was designed to suit most sleeper types. Since the bed is all-foam, heavier-bodied sleepers shouldn’t try it. Instead, go with a hybrid model.

Motion Transfer

When you’re in a couple and looking for a mattress, you need to choose one that’s great at isolating movement. Trust us, no one wants to be disturbed by a restless partner. Talk about an instant romance kill!

As a rule, foam beds perform well in motion isolation. The Tuft & Needle mattress is no exception. The Adaptive foam and the base layer are great at dampening movement

Though many Tuft and Needle mattress reviews would not put it as one of the best models for motion isolation. The Adaptive foam in the comfort layer is a responsive material like latex. As such, you might feel some movement during your sleep, but not enough so that it keeps you awake.

In short, while not the best, the Tuft & Needle mattress is better at handling motion transfer. It’s a good choice for couples in our books.

Edge Support

We have now arrived at the point where most Tuft & Needle mattress reviews have complaints.

As Tuft and Needle mattress is made out of foam, it doesn’t excel in edge support. Even though the base provides some stability, it still can’t compare to a hybrid or an innerspring model.

Frankly speaking, if you still want to get the Tuft & Needle mattress, consider a bigger sized model. If you like to sleep on the edge or heavily rely on it, you might want to look for another model. Take a look at our top picks for people with mobility issues.

Pressure Relief

No one wants to wake up cranky and in pain because they’ve slept on the wrong mattress. Which is why one of the essential factors to any bed is pressure relief.

Thanks to its construction, the Tuft & Needle mattress is excellent at providing pressure relief. The Adaptive foam contours to the body’s shape and keeps the spine properly aligned. In turn, the polyfoam base keeps your body from sinking in. You don’t have to worry about waking up with back pain, which is important if you prefer sleeping on your back.

We do have to say that the Tuft and Needle mattress might not be the right fit for some side and stomach sleepers.

Temperature Regulation

The Tuft and Needle mattress is an all-foam model, and this type is known to trap some heat. However, thanks to the T&N Adaptive foam, the Tuft & Needle mattress is designed to keep the heat away and keep you cool. The cover also helps to add to the overall breathability. According to some of the Tuft & Needle mattress reviews, the polyfoam is known to sleep somewhat warm.

All things considered, the Tuft & Needle mattress does a better job at cooling than most of its competitors. This is why this model is called a temperature-neutral bed. It doesn’t sleep too cool or too warm.

Most sleepers shouldn’t have a problem with heat retention. Some hot sleepers may enjoy the Tuft and Needle mattress. But we do recommend you check out our list of best mattresses for hot sleepers.

Off-gassing

Like with most bed-in-a-box models, the Tuft and Needle mattress may release “a new mattress smell.” Many people can be skeptical of the odor. They think that the bed might contain some toxic materials. The unease is entirely understandable. Your and your loved one’s health is of utmost importance.

But, don’t be alarmed! As the bed is compressed during shipping, it can result in a manufactured smell. You may have to air out the Tuft & Needle mattress for at least 48 hours, or at most a couple of days. Just leave it in a well-ventilated room with no sheets, and you’re good to go!

Sleeper Type Preferences & Weight

According to their website, the Tuft & Needle mattress was designed to suit all kinds of sleepers.

In reality, that isn’t so. Based on various factors, a mattress can feel differently from person to person.

As such, we have gathered all the experiences from Tuft and Needle mattress reviewers. Let’s jump right in and see if this bed just might be the right choice for you.

Side Sleepers

A person sleeping on their side

Usually, side sleepers prefer soft to medium-firm mattresses. They provide the sleepers the necessary pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. For them, it is crucial to experience a cradle-like feel when they are sleeping.

Based on many Tuft and Needle mattress reviewers’ opinions, we don’t think this is a good choice for strict side sleepers. The bed’s top foam layer might not be firm enough for heavyweight side sleepers. There is a possibility they will sink in over time. Petite side sleepers might find the Tuft & Needle mattress too firm for them to feel “hugged” by it.

Meanwhile, average weight side sleepers are likely to enjoy the Tuft & Needle mattress. Especially those on the lighter spectrum. They should get just the right amount of pressure relief in critical areas.

For side sleepers, the T&N Mint model might be a better choice, as it has a softer feel.

Back Sleepers

A person sleeping on their back

When it comes to back sleepers, they tend to prefer firmer mattresses. As their name suggests, they put a lot of pressure on their back. So they need a bed that supports the lumbar area.

Most back sleepers should get much-needed support and pressure relief. Thanks to the Tuft & Needle mattress’s medium-firmness and construction, their spine will be properly aligned.

Lightweight and average weight back sleepers will find the Tuft and Needle mattress supportive. However, individuals over 230 lbs may experience some sinkage around the hips.

All in all, we believe that the Tuft & Needle mattress is a fantastic choice for back sleepers. It gets our seal of approval, that’s for sure!

Stomach Sleepers

A person sleeping on their stomach

Stomach sleepers heavily rely on support around the abdomen, as well as around the hips. So that they don’t experience sinkage around the hips and lower back, they often go with firmer models.

Looking through multiple Tuft and Needle mattress reviews, they all say the same thing. This model is not the best pick for stomach sleepers. The top layer may feel comfortable at first, but their hips might start dipping a bit as time goes on. Which in turn puts a strain on the lumbar area.

Individuals under 130 lbs might get the needed support. Some lighter average weight stomach sleepers might enjoy it as well. However, they might experience some backaches. Heavier sleepers should avoid this bed. They should choose a more suitable one from our list of mattresses for their body type.

Overall, the Tuft & Needle mattress may leave stomach sleepers wanting. But, they might find a better fit with the T&N Hybrid model. It feels soft and has better support.

Combination Sleepers

A person sleeping in various positions.

What are combination sleepers looking for in a mattress? Answer: responsiveness and bounciness.

When they are asleep, these sleeper types tend to change multiple positions. In short, they don’t like a bed, where they feel “stuck.” Hence why the Tuft & Needle mattress is generally well-received among combination sleepers. Thanks to its construction, the mattress responds well to movement and has just the right amount of bounce.

Although, some combination sleepers do have a preferred side when they’re sleeping. This preference can affect how one experiences a bed. Back combination sleepers should find Tuft and Needle mattress quite enjoyable. Those sleepers that like to sleep on their side or stomach might not like it all that much.

Another thing to consider is the weight factor. As we mentioned before, heavy sleepers should look at other models like the hybrid ones. Light- and average weight combination sleepers might find the Tuft & Needle mattress an excellent pick for them. But this also depends on their preferences.

Before you make a final decision, please check out our findings for other sleeper types to get the whole picture.

Other Mattress Models

Other than their flagship model, the company sells two other mattress models. These are:

But what makes them stand out from the Tuft & Needle mattress? Who might enjoy these models?

Let’s find out more in the following sections!

Upon further research, we have found out that the company sells one other model. It is found exclusively on Amazon.com – the T&N Nod Hybrid. As such, we have decided to add the model to our Tuft & Needle mattress review to make a better and more informed decision for yourself.

T&N Mint

The Mint mattress is a higher-end all-foam mattress at a great value. Unlike the Tuft & Needle mattress, the Mint has three layers. The transitional layer makes the model slightly softer. In turn, this makes it a better fit for side sleepers. The Mint is reported to be better at both cooling and pressure relief than the Tuft and Needle mattress. Other features are more or less the same.

The Mint is available in standard sizes but is 12″ tall, making it thicker than the flagship model. Price-wise, the Mint is more expensive than the two. But it’s still at a low price-point compared to the other models on the market. The starting price for a Twin size Mint mattress is $745.

If you are looking for an affordable model with a more luxurious feel, then check out the T&N Mint mattress.

Tuft & Needle Mint

Perfect for couples, Tuft & Needle exists to provide restful sleep with an additional Mint layer for pressure relief and softness.

T&N Hybrid

Are you a heavier-bodied individual but would still like to try the Tuft & Needle mattress? You might want to consider trying out the T&N Hybrid mattress

Unlike the Tuft and Needle mattress, the Hybrid has five layers of foam and coils. This construction adds support and bounce. Perfect for back and combination sleepers! As it has springs, the mattress keeps a lot cooler than the flagship model.

Not to mention that it has better edge support than both Mint and Tuft & Needle mattresses. So if you rely on edges, this might be the right pick for you. Sadly, it doesn’t excel that much in motion transfer and pressure relief as the flagship model does.

The Hybrid is available in all standard sizes, and like Mint, it is also 12″ tall. Compared to both the Mint and Tuft & Needle mattresses, the Hybrid is pricier. The starting price is $995 for a Twin sized mattress. If you look at other hybrid models on the market, it’s still inexpensive.

We’re sure if you do decide to get the T&N Hybrid, that you won’t have any regrets.

Foam and springs work together on the hybrid version of Tuft and Needle to build ongoing support and advanced comfort for all sleepers out there.

Mattress Prices and Sizes

If you are a budget-minded shopper, you will be pleased to know that the Tuft & Needle mattress is below-average than other all-foam models. With the starting price of $745 for a Twin size mattress, this model does come with a really nice price tag. Not only that, but the company often offers discounts and special deals. Very wallet-friendly

The Tuft & Needle mattress is available in all standard sizes. Interestingly enough, the bigger-sized mattress is a bit lighter than the average foam. For example, the California King model weighs 94 lbs instead of the average 130 to 180 lbs. This is good news for you if you opt-out of adding the White Glove Delivery service to your order.

The Tuft and Needle mattress is 10″ tall, which is the average height for an all-foam bed.

We can see why many people choose the Tuft and Needle mattress. It is a light, durable, premium-quality mattress at an affordable price. All in all, not a bad choice to spend your nights on.

Warranty

Mattress warranty is vital to know but is often overlooked or not looked at as thoroughly as one should. What might be the reason for this?

It could be the fact that the language is often too abstract for most buyers. But luckily, that’s where we come in to demystify this complex topic.

The Tuft and Needle mattresses all come with a 10-year limited warranty. What does this mean?

It means that the warranty has certain aspects that it covers and aspects that it doesn’t cover.

If any time during the ten years period, your Tuft & Needle mattress warranty covers:

  • Any physical flaws that cause the foam to split or crack despite using and maintaining it properly.
  • A visible indentation or sag greater than ¾ of an inch.
  • Defects or flaws made during the manufacturing process that lead to premature foam deterioration or the cover fabric to tear or unstitched.

The warranty does not cover or excludes:

  • Normal wear and tear.
  • Physical damages like slight flaws, minor imperfections, and discoloration that occurs over time
  • Defects caused by abuse, misuse, or neglect of a mattress.
  • Improper storage or use of the mattress.
  • Etc.

The warranty is non-transferable, meaning it is only valid to the original owner. It doesn’t apply if the Tuft & Needle mattress was bought from unauthorized retailers

For more information about the Tuft & Needle mattress warranty, please visit their official website.

Certification

When it comes to certification, the Tuft & Needle mattress has the other models beat. It carries not 1, not 2, but 5 different certifications!

The Tuft and Needle mattress has the following accolades:

  1. The UL GREENGUARD GOLD certification – this means the mattress aids in creating a healthier indoor environment.
  2. Intertek’s Clean Air Certification – the model has low quantities of VOC, meaning it does not have a negative effect on indoor air quality.
  3. CertiPUR-US® – the mattress’s foam was tested to be low in VOC emissions and free from harmful chemicals.
  4. Parent Tested Parent Approved Seal of Approval™ – the product was approved by real-life testings by actual consumers.
  5. Today’s Parent Approved – the mattress went through testing for specific characteristics essential to parents.

The Tuft & Needle mattress does not contain flame retardants or fiberglass. The fire barrier is a blend of cotton and polyester that was treated with food-grade salt.

How Long Does a Tuft and Needle Mattress Need To Expand?

Well, technically, you can sleep on the Tuft & Needle mattress straight away. However, the company recommends waiting at least 2-3 hours to expand after unboxing. But even then, it’s not fully expanded.

One Tuft & Needle mattress review has mentioned that it will continue to expand up to 72 hours. What do we think you should do?

Order the mattress to arrive early in the day and wait a few hours after unboxing to sleep on it.

Keep in mind that it will take you at least 2 to 3 weeks to break in the Tuft and Needle mattress.

Additional Services

  3. If you purchased the Tuft & Needle mattress through Amazon or Lowe’s, you need to contact their customer service.

  5. If you ordered the mattress through Huckberry, contact partnercx@tuftandneedle.com.

Want to exchange your Tuft and Needle mattress? You can do that if you bought the mattress through their official website. Simply call their customer service, and they will go through the process with you. Do keep in mind that, that the exchange will null your sleep trial.

Giving Back to the Community

In recent years we have seen a rise of companies that are active in social and environmental issues.

Ever since its beginnings, the company puts “p” into philanthropy. They’ve started this by implementing their return policy and donating back in 2014. The returned Tuft and Needle mattresses are donated to their charity partners. The company also organizes volunteer events with its employees.

In 2017 the company even launched a school fundraising program called the Tuft & Needle Gives Back Program™. The program promotes partnerships with schools. The company gives back 25% of the proceeds from every mattress ordered by the school, teachers, parents, etc.

If you want to know more about the program, please check the following link

According to their website, today, the company has:

  • Donated over $13m in mattresses
  • Accumulated over 2500 volunteer hours
  • Have partnered up with over 575 schools with their fundraising program.

The company also offers a special 15% discount for military, first responders, and healthcare professionals as a way of thanking people that give so much back to others.

So in conclusion, by buying a Tuft and Needle mattress, you are also supporting a great company. A company that emphasizes social responsibilities.

Is the Tuft and Needle Mattress Any Good?

And so what have you learned from this Tuft and Needle mattress review, boys and girls?

The Tuft & Needle mattress is an excellent quality all-foam model with a fantastic price tag. It’s a very versatile and durable mattress with no additional bells and whistles.

Despite its simplistic design, the medium-firm Tuft and Needle mattress is very supportive. It also excels at providing pressure relief after a long day of the hustle and bustle.

Worried about feeling “stuck?”

The Tuft & Needle mattress is responsive enough so that you can move and shift at ease. Compared to other foam models on the market, this mattress does a better job at keeping you cool and fresh

Many lightweight sleepers will enjoy the feel of the Tuft and Needle mattress. Combination sleepers will enjoy how easy it is to move on its surface. Light-medium side sleepers should be able to enjoy some pressure relief. Overall, the Tuft & Needle mattress enjoys great popularity with back sleepers

We don’t recommend strict stomach and heavyweight sleepers to get this mattress model. Instead, we encourage them to try the T&N Hybrid model
